Glen Rock High School
Class of 1959

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah

This has been a tough year, but as this season is one or birth and hope. Here in our everyday world there is new hope for normalcy due to the discovery of the new vaccines. The vaccines are a fulfillment of our hopes and prayers and we need give thanks to our creator and our heartful thanks to those who backed the vaccines and in particular to those men and women who spent extraordinary brain power and plain selfless work to apply their theories, correct them, turn them into a product, prove it works and now to deliver it to the public.  Winston Churchill's words ring through the decades " much [is] owed by so many to so few."

Jim De Vinney died November 28, 2020.

When I find his obituary, I will post it. Jim was career Navy rising to the top enlisted rank of Master Chief. He lived in San Antonio, TX.

Paul Stanley Dies

Paul D. Stanley Sr’s Obituary

November 29, 1941 – November 26, 2020

Paul was an exceptional man.  He lived a life of purpose, and passion for God, his family, friends, and his country.  His high impact life was empowered by his deep and abiding relationship with Jesus Christ and his Word.  Our beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather went home to be with his Heavenly Father on November 26, 2020 (I’m sure heaven was rocking at his entry celebration).  In his final stages of decline, he was in the presence of his family who loved him so very much.  Paul was the 5th son of six children born to Russell and Myrtle Stanley in Glen Rock, New Jersey where he grew up.

Paul graduated from West Point in 1963. It was during his freshman year where his passion for following Christ and discipling men took hold. While there, he played both football and lacrosse. He earned all-American honors and a team captaincy in lacrosse his senior year.

Second only to his decision to follow Jesus Christ, marrying Phyllis Jewitt was his most cherished. They met while Paul was in his Sophomore year at West Point and married on June 16, 1963. Paul and Phyllis were single-minded in their pursuit and devotion to Christ and His Kingdom.  For 57 years, they raised a family, impacted the world, and fulfilled their inscribed marital verse from Psalm 34:3 “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together”.

As a newly minted Second Lieutenant in the Infantry, Paul qualified as an Airborne Ranger, and began a rapid ascent in the US Army. He rose to the rank of Major in under 7 years and excelled in combat leadership, earning a Silver Star for valor, two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He had made many life-changing impacts upon others through his leading, developing, and inspiring others by example, and found a passion in leadership. These early experiences began seeding the foundation of his life’s passion. Following Vietnam, Paul landed his dream opportunity to complete a PhD in leadership and teach the subject to cadets at West Point.

While on their initial military assignments, Paul and Phyllis became even more deeply involved in discipleship. Their hearts began to stir. The Lord called him from leading men in the Infantry to helping leaders lead, grow fruit, become disciple-makers, and impact the world for Christ’s Kingdom.  Giving up a wonderful military career, they joined the Navigators.

Assignments with the Navigators started domestically, but shortly moved to Vienna, Austria in 1973, where Paul was a central driver in building and growing a robust underground Nav ministry behind the Iron Curtain. Then it was on to Bonn, Germany in 1977, where he served as the European Director for seven years.  Returning to the USA in 1984, Paul spent his final decades with the Navigators serving on the International Leadership Team (Colorado Springs)--focusing on leading and developing leaders.  The Navigator’s motto is " To Know Christ and Make Him Known”—he never tired in this pursuit.

His final professional stint was serving as the interim President of Greater European Mission (GEM), as he helped bring on the next generation of leaders and place the organization on firm footing for the future..

In his mid-30’s, Paul was moved by the story of Gideon, who selected 300 warriors and defeated a numerically superior foe. It inspired him to invest heavily in the few and he sensed the Lord telling him that he would give him 300 leaders to intentionally develop. This goal was always in focus throughout his later career--finishing with over 350 benefactors mentored by Paul.

Of note, Paul started the Leader Development Network to help others lead, how to lead leaders,  and to live like Jesus Christ as leaders, which has become the leadership model for Christian organizations worldwide. He has co-authored a book titled "Connecting", that has become seminal to the subject of mentoring in colleges and universities.

Paul was a faithful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to all.  He loved challenges, loved God, loved people and was passionate about making a life-changing impact on the people to whom God led him.  His life was built around his faith in God and in Jesus his Savior.

Like the Apostle Paul said, Paul has “fought the good fight, he has finished the race, he has kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).  He started, lived and finished his life well. Even while enduring seven years of dementia decline, he remained a gentle warrior throughout.

Paul is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Phyllis, his children: Deb Stanley of Atlanta, GA, Paul and his wife Kristin Stanley of Highlands Ranch, CO, Scott and his wife Shireen of Rhinebeck, NY, and Kimberly and her husband Rob Borchert of Colorado Springs, CO, and 15 Grandchildren: Jordan, Tyler, Marissa, Michael, Matthew, Rachel, Mollie, Katherine, Daniel, Elaina, Andrew, Grace, Micah, and Jack; and 1 great-grandchild: Viola. He is also survived by his brother: Gordon and his wife Peg  Stanley of Wyckoff, NJ and his sister Linda and Bob O'Connor of Hackensack. He was predeceased by his brothers Richard, Warren, and John Stanley.

A memorial service will be held at The Road Church December 1st, at 2pm.

Thank you for your contributions to the Scholarship Fund. We reached the goal of being able to award two $2,500 scholarship to two 2020 graduating seniors. Plus, we have some left over toward next year's scholarships. The June Awards Assembly will be a type of virtual one. Our participation will be limited to sending the checks to the school for the administration to disburse. It is a tough for these 2020 graduates to have no Awards Assembly, no graduation ceremony and no grand ball.Think what that would have meant to you. That we have not forgotten them will be appreciated.
